How Did Team Building Start?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The concept of team building can be traced back to the late 1920s when a study was done on the reactions of a group of workers that were placed under different conditions. The study was known as the Hawthorne Studies and researchers found through much analysis that building a large sense of group identity and social support was needed for greater worker interaction. Elton Mayo, one of the researchers found critical conditions that were required to have a successful team.

He observed that managers of the group should have to have a personal interest in each individual’s achievements. He saw that groups should help one another set their own conditions of work, he faithfully provided feedback to the group on their performance.

Overall, in the Hawthorne studies looked at many aspects of motivation, self-determination, team behaviour and if there were variables that could affect team productivity.

Capitalise On Private Corporate Events

The sunnier months in Britain are associated with prestigious sporting events, art shows and musical acts touring the country, as such these entertainment sectors are often host to corporate events. Although still open to the public, major shows offer hospitality suites and exclusive VIP areas especially for entertaining corporate clients.

Using corporate events for networking is popular because it is an opportunity to meet other people working in the industry as well as an opportunity to entertain new clients. Some companies choose to host their own corporate events, often based on a theme.

This offers a unique opportunity to invite selected guests along as well as the people who work for the company. Privately hosted events can be as elaborate as any major public event, attracting big names in the entertainment industry. Alternatively the event can be tailored to reflect the nature of the industry for a memorable networking opportunity.
